Air suspension is a type of vehicle suspension that's powered by an electric compressor or pump. This pump delivers air into flexible bellows called suspension air springs. This keeps them at a level of pressure so they can behave like standard coil springs and are usually made from a reinforced type of rubber. Air suspension also differs from hydropneumatic suspension because it uses pressurised air instead of pressurised liquid.

The car remains at a fixed height regardless of how much weight it's carrying. Although an air spring is flexible under typical loads, it becomes stiffer when compressed under an increased ride weight.

Failure of air springs leads to symptoms such as:

• Bowed suspension - if the suspension is sagging at one point, it could be a sign of a worn air spring
• Bouncy ride - worn air springs will transfer the suspension energy to the frame of the car, causing the car to bounce and be uneven while being driven
• Bottoming out - broken air springs can make the vehicle bottom out, delivering a dangerous and uneven drive
• The compressor or pump keeps running - a split in the air spring rubber could let air out, making the compressor continually run as it tries to keep the air in the springs
