What is Engine Oil?
Today’s car engines are more complex than ever, and using the right oil is essential for optimum fuel economy, minimising emissions, and maximising turbo life. It maintains and lubricates the internal combustion engine's components as they move and turn. It reduces friction and loss of performance within the engine, ensuring it runs smoothly. GSF Car Parts is here to help you choose the proper engine oil for your vehicle.
It is essential that Low SAPS (low sulphated ash, phosphorous & sulphur) engine oils are used for diesel and petrol engines with exhaust treatment systems. Low SAPS engine oils are safe for catalytic converters & diesel particulate filters (DPFs). Detergents in standard oils can form ash on combustion, leading to the DPF clogging up by soot, damaging the filter and impairing engine and emissions performance.
How to Check your Engine Oil Level?
Check your car manual first to see how much oil should be in your car.
- Open the bonnet and locate the dipstick. Like a ring that's near the engine
- Pull the dipstick out all the way of the dipstick funnel and wipe the excess oil away with a clean cloth. This will give you an accurate reading
- Reinsert the dipstick back into the funnel and pull it back out again
- You'll get a clear reading this way
- There are two marks on the dipstick that the oil should sit between. A minimum and maximum amount
- If it's below the bottom mark, you need to top up; otherwise, you will damage the engine
- If it's above, you have too much in your car. This can also cause engine problems
