How do I Know what Oil to Put in My Car?
If the engine oil light comes on, it's time to check the oil. So the question you ask is 'What engine oil do I need?'
Firstly, always check the car's manual. It'll show you here which type of engine oil is suitable for your make and model. Engine oil is graded by its viscosity. How thick or thin it is. If the manual is missing you can ask one of our staff at a GSF Car Parts store which oil to use.
The two types of common engine oil grades are 5W-30 and 5W-40. The '5' refers to the viscosity in cold weather, and the 'W' stands for 'winter'. The other numbers, '30' and '40' represent the oil flow at high temperatures. '30' tends to be for newer petrol engines and '40' is more for older petrol or diesel engines.
It's always best to make sure you've got the correct engine oil in your car as the wrong kind could lead to engine damage. And always make sure you keep it topped up as you can completely ruin the engine in your car. Do this by checking your car's dipstick or if the engine oil light comes on. If you need to completely change the oil in your car you can follow our handy guide.
Are Antifreeze and Coolant the Same Thing?
To keep your car's cooling system functioning correctly you will need to use antifreeze and coolant. So are they the same thing? Is coolant antifreeze?
Antifreeze reduces the water in a car’s cooling system from freezing. When antifreeze is mixed with water it is known as coolant. About a 50:50 ratio of Antifreeze to coolant mix. Antifreeze must always be combined with water before you use it. Coolant in your engine regulates the temperature in extremely hot and cold environments. You can find out more about antifreeze in our knowledge hub and how to flush it through the radiator.
How do you know if you Need Brake Fluid?
You might need to top up your brake fluid or even have a complete brake fluid change if:
- Your brake pedal is light or spongy
- The ABS Dashboard light is on
- Your vehicle doesn't stop as quickly as it should
- Smells or odd noises when you brake
If any of these things occur you should look at a brake fluid change. Change your brake fluid around every 2 years or 30,000 miles anyway to keep your car safe. A typical cost for brake fluid change can vary depending on which garage you get it done at.
What Oil is used for Power Steering?
Power steering fluid is a hydraulic oil that transfers the intricate movements of the cars steering wheel to its wheels. Keeping it topped up is essential to your car's steering maintenance – making sure the steering system is well lubricated, avoiding corrosion.
Like engine oil and coolant, power steering oil levels should be checked periodically to make sure your vehicle's steering is tip-top.
What is Transmission Oil Used for?
Whether you drive a manual or automatic, you still need transmission oil. Transmission oil lubricates your vehicle's transmission – the internal working parts, including the gearbox, prop shaft, clutch, differential, and drive shaft. Making sure these operate seamlessly protects the transmission in your car from damage and overheating.
