With so many crucial components of the car relying on battery power, it is vital to ensure that your car benefits from the correct battery for the job.

Our handy guide lets you find out how to choose, charge, and change your battery. And if your battery is flat, and you need a jump-start, you can learn how to here.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you disconnect a car battery?

-

First, turn off the ignition and remove the key, then put on gloves and eye protection. Identify the terminals: the negative (-) is usually black and marked with a minus sign, while the positive (+) is red and marked with a plus sign. Always remove the negative terminal first using a spanner or socket, then disconnect the positive terminal. If you’re taking the battery out completely, undo any clamps or brackets and lift it carefully-it’s heavy and contains acid. Never let tools touch both terminals at once, and if you’re storing the battery, keep it in a cool, dry place and consider using a maintenance charger.

How long does it take to charge a car battery?

+

It depends on the charger and battery size. A smart charger typically takes 4–12 hours for a full charge, however you can get trickle chargers which are slower but safer for long-term maintenance.

How do you test a car battery?

+

The easiest method is using a multimeter: set it to DC volts, connect the red lead to the positive terminal and the black lead to the negative terminal and check the reading. A healthy battery should show around 12.6 volts with the engine off; anything below 12.4 volts suggests it needs charging or replacing.

Why is my car battery more likely to fail in winter?

+

Cold weather slows the chemical reactions inside the battery, reducing its ability to hold charge while increasing electrical demand.

What voltage should a healthy car battery have?

+

A fully charged car battery should read around 12.6 volts when the engine is off, and 13.7–14.7 volts when the engine is running.

How long should a car battery last?

+

Most car batteries last 3–5 years depending on driving habits, climate, and maintenance. If you’re noticing a drain in power on your battery, it could be caused by your alternator or another electrical fault. Consult a professional if you’ve changed your battery but are still experiencing issues.
