When it comes time to purchase a new car, who do you typically consult? If you’re like most of us, you talk it over with your spouse, a family member, or maybe a close friend.
In most cases, however, you wouldn’t even think about your local council.
Unfortunately, you’re going to have to from now on.
Why Your Local Council is Involved
A legislation called the Proposals for Local Growth plan was recently put into effect. What many drivers don’t realise is that this plan included a piece of legislation that all but slipped under the radar and was only quietly announced by the Department of Transport.
With the addition of this new law, all drivers in England will be expected to consult with their local councils each and every time they decide to purchase a new car. This consultation will involve discussions about tax alternatives available to each motorist based on a set of criteria. In addition, advisors will discuss with new car buyers how the new Local Growth Road Surcharge will be collected.
The Local Growth Road Surcharge can be collected a couple of different ways; it may be added to council tax payments on a monthly basis or it may be taken as an extra lien on salaries. The exact amount drivers will be charged will be based on the car’s CO2 emissions, its performance, the number of seats in the car, and whether or not the car’s interior is made from Alcantara.
Who Is Affected?
For right now, car buyers that live in Northern Ireland, Wales, and Scotland won’t have to worry about consulting their local council about each new car they decide to purchase. They are exempt. However, most other locations in the UK will be affected, and it may only be a matter of time before the three additional parliaments follow suit.
What Does This Mean For You?
For most drivers, this new legislation probably comes as a bit of a shock and feels like interference to their daily lives. If you have decide to purchase a new Audi, Ford, or even a BMW, however, this new law will need to become a way of life.
If your current Audi is in such dire need of retirement, there are only two choices you can make. You can either purchase the necessary Audi parts to get it running like it used to, or you can call your local council and listen to their advice on which car to purchase next. While you might not like it, keep in mind that the local council isn’t going to tell you which car you can purchase and which one you can’t. They are simply going to inform you of the taxes associated with the new Audi or Ford and let you make the end choice.
While consulting with the local council may seem like an added frustration when purchasing a car, remember that you have options. You could purchase the car parts necessary to fix up your old car and avoid purchasing a new car altogether. Or, you could simply listen to what the council has to say and accept the tax for the car you choose.
