No car is ever perfect, there are too many car parts that can wear out over time. The Renault Scenic, however, seems to be more reliable than most other cars. Nevertheless, there are some common problems you should expect when you purchase this type of car.
Common Problems With the Scenic
- Bouncing Alternator Drive Belt- In most cars, when the alternator drive belt begins acting up, it either needs tightened or replaced. In the Renault Scenic, this is not always the case because the alternator pulley has a ratchet mechanism built into it. If you find that replacing the belt doesn’t solve your problem, the issue may be the seizure of the ratchet mechanism. This can result in noise and bounce in an otherwise perfect belt. In order to correct this problem, the pulley will need to be replaced.
- Top End Failure- Failing to take care of the alternator pulley problem can lead to even more issues with Renault parts. In fact, a failed pulley can lead to a shredded belt, which can become caught in the crankshaft pulley, stretching the cambelt or making it jump, and resulting in top end failure. This problem is often preceded by a whistling noise in line with the engine speed. If you notice problems with certain car parts, like the alternator belt or pulley, and hear a whistling noise, have the problem immediately checked by a mechanic.
- Starting Issues- Have you experienced problems starting your Renault Scenic, especially if you accidentally touch the accelerator pedal before turning the ignition? This issue is caused by metal fragments building up on the TDC, or Top Dead Centre sensor. The sensor has to be cleaned on occasion in order to prevent these complications from occurring.
- Rusty Brakes- Has your Renault Scenic been sitting unused for a little while? This can lead to rusty brakes that could affect the safety of the vehicle. If you aren’t going to be driving the Scenic, take the time to drive it for at least 15 minutes every week. This will keep the brake discs in working order and prevent them from becoming rusty.
- Pool of Water Under Engine- On hot summer days, it’s all-too-common to notice a pool of water under the engine of your Scenic. You might panic at first, but don’t worry; there’s nothing wrong with any of the Renault parts. This is caused by condensation build up on the air conditioning compressor unit. While this is perfectly harmless, many Renault owners may be baffled or worried by the appearance of water under their engine.
- Electric Window Fail- If the electric window on your driver’s side door has been acting up lately and has suddenly stopped working altogether, the problem is most likely the window regulator. This is a very commonly reported problem.
- Water in Body Cavities- After a heavy rain, water tends to collect in certain areas of the Scenic and may result in problems with car parts. While the water will escape quickly once you drive the car, if it is parked for a long period of time, it could impair certain Renault parts and lead to rust. If you’ll be parking your car for a long period of time, cover it with a water-resistant cloth to avoid any water collection problems.
