Frequently Asked Questions

How do you check your engine oil level?

-

Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, insert it back fully, then pull it out again to check the level. The oil should sit between the minimum and maximum markers. Ensure your vehicle is on level ground and that the engine isn’t too hot before checking oil levels as they can skew the reading.

How often should you change engine oil?

+

Most vehicles need an oil change every 5,000–10,000 miles or every 6 to 12 months, but this depends on driving conditions and the type of oil used. Stop–start driving, towing, or short trips can shorten the interval.

How should you dispose of engine oil?

+

Never pour engine oil down drains, onto the ground, or into household waste. Used oil should be taken to a recycling centre or garage that accepts waste oil for safe disposal or recycling.

Is engine oil flammable?

+

Engine oil is combustible rather than highly flammable. It requires high temperatures to ignite, unlike petrol, but should still be stored carefully.

Does engine oil expire or deteriorate over time?

+

Yes, engine oil deteriorates as it’s exposed to heat, moisture, combustion by-products, and oxidation. Even unused oil has a shelf life of about five years.

How do you top up your engine oil and how often should you do it?

+

Remove the oil filler cap, then pour in the correct grade of oil slowly and in small amounts to avoid overfilling. Use the dipstick to recheck the level as you go. You should check your oil every few months and top up whenever it’s low. If you’re topping it up frequently, you may have an oil leak somewhere which will need to be investigated.
