So, you’ve finally landed a new position at a well-known company. It’s your dream job. You’ve got the benefits and salary you always wanted, and the company culture fits your personality perfectly. As a bonus, you’ve just been informed that you’ll also be receiving a company car: a new, beautiful Peugeot.

While this is an exciting announcement, it’s also a very serious one. This new vehicle may not be technically yours, but many of the responsibilities that come with owning a car will be. Before you drive away, make sure you know exactly what you must and must not do when driving your new Peugeot.

Company Cars: Your Responsibilities

Every company is different, so it is important to speak to your employer and discover what his or her specific guidelines are in regards to the company car you’ll be driving. In the majority of cases, however, this is what you can expect.

  • Keep it Clean- Think about this car as a rental; it isn’t yours, and you’ll have to return it should the company decide to upgrade your vehicle, or you lose your job. Because of this, you’ll need to keep the vehicle as clean as possible, on the inside and out.

  • Regulating Drivers- Company vehicles aren’t for the entire family, but your employer may allow you to use the vehicle for personal purposes. That doesn’t mean your 16 year daughter can drive it, however. In most cases, only employees and their spouses will be allowed to drive the car, unless an emergency occurs that requires a different driver.

  • Traffic Offences- You are responsible for obeying all traffic laws while behind the wheel of your new Peugeot. However, if you happen to obtain a ticket for traffic offences or parking fines, you’ll be expect to pay them on time. If your offence is caught by a traffic camera, don’t expect the company to turn their head. They are required by law to provide your name, address, driving licence number, and date of birth to the authorities in order to avoid prosecution.

  • Car Maintenance- You are responsible for ensuring your new Peugeot is properly maintained while it’s in your hands. Follow the regular vehicle service schedule, check the tyres regularly, maintain a valid MOT certificate, and avoid anything that could invalidate the vehicle’s warranty. If certain Peugeot parts begin to act up, report the problem immediately. You may be responsible for the cost of repairing or replacing certain car parts. Large repairs are generally covered by the company however, unless it is determined that the damage to the car parts was excessive and due to something you did. If this is the case, you will be responsible for the cost of replacement Peugeot parts.

  • Keeping Vehicle Logs- Not every employer will ask you to maintain a log on the vehicle you’ve been provided, but most will for insurance and tax purposes. Maintain this log carefully, keeping track of every trip you take, even if it’s just to the grocery store.

Are you being given a company car? Keep your employer happy and the keys to that new Peugeot in your hands by knowing exactly what is expected of you while you’re driving the company vehicle.
