If someone were to take a look inside your garage, they would probably be amazed at what they found. After all, you have almost everything you could ever need, from the gigantic tool box that made your Christmas list last year to that five piece drill set you keep meaning to return to your neighbour.

If someone were to take a look inside your garage, they would probably be amazed at what they found. After all, you have almost everything you could ever need, from the gigantic tool box that made your Christmas list last year to that five piece drill set you keep meaning to return to your neighbour. And, when it comes to your Volkswagen, you make sure you are stocked on washer fluid, oil, and coolant.

But what about spare VW parts? If you needed to replace something right now, would you have not only the tools to do it, but the car parts you needed as well? While your garage might be full of useful items, there’s a good chance you don’t have all of the items necessary to repair your VW.

Why You Need Spare VW Parts

You actually don’t need every spare part for your VW at hand, but there are some you do need to keep in your garage and your car. These spare car parts allow you to keep your Volkswagen running continually, even if you are stuck out in the middle of nowhere or even if you are at home with no way to get to the auto store or mechanic. Spare parts save you the cost and time of a tow, and keep you from damaging your vehicle.

What Spare Parts to Have at Hand

  • Spark Plugs

Spark plugs play an important role in the function of your VW. They not only make sure your car actually starts, but runs smoothly as well. When one or more spark plugs fail, you may notice a drop in performance of your vehicle or the VW might not start at all. Unfortunately, when one spark plug dies, the rest tend to follow quickly, so it is essential to keep an extra set in both your garage and in the boot of your car.
  • Headlamp Bulbs

Driving your VW without both headlamps functioning correctly is not only dangerous for you and others on the road, but can result in a fine or a Notice of Public Contact if you are pulled over by an officer of the law. Making sure your bulbs are functioning correctly, and replacing the bulbs as soon as you notice they have failed is much less expensive than paying a fine or court fee.
  • Wiper Blades

Ever try driving your VW in the middle of a thunderstorm without using your wiper blades? It isn’t easy; in fact it can be extremely dangerous. When these VW parts aren’t functioning correctly, or have broken, your visibility is lessened and you risk having an accident. At the same time, trying to use those broken wiper blades when you desperately need them can result in damage to both your car and your windshield. Check your wiper blades frequently, and keep a few extra at hand- just in case.
  • Fan Belt

There are a couple of belts in your VW that play an important role in its function. The fan belt, also known as the drive belt, is one of the most essential. If it breaks, your engine may fail to perform at all, or you may find it is difficult to steer or drive your Volkswagen. Fan belts are inexpensive car parts you need to keep in your garage or car at all times to ensure you can quickly replace the belt and get back on the road should it wear down and break.
  • Battery

Have you ever woken up in the morning to find you accidentally left the lights on in your VW all night? With your battery dead, you have to either rely on the help of a neighbour to give you a jump, or you need to replace the battery altogether. Since you can’t always rely on the help of others, having a spare battery makes it easy to get the car up and running quickly.

You don’t necessarily need to have every spare VW part at hand, but there are some that when kept in your garage, in your VW, or both can make your life easier and help you ensure your Volkswagen is always running at its best.
