Ford Voted Number 1 In The US Over Amazon

On the Brand Index website Ford has been name number 1 - http://www.brandindex.com/ranking/us/2013-mid

Obviously Ford were happy about this and we quickly saw a Tweet about the news - https://twitter.com/Ford/status/355748764201402369
.  But what does this actually mean?  A brand is so intangible and with Amazon coming number two being such a different type of company does this really matter in terms of car sales?

The Brand Index is the result of thousands of interviews in America and the result is which brands have the highest perception.  This is of course maybe not the ultimate goal.  For example BMW will be more interested in its brand perception in its target demographic rather than with everyone who might not be able to afford a higher priced car.

Ford is the everyman car in America and with such a huge brand perception.  It's strange how little penetration Ford have in the Chinese market, but Ford are trying to change that with a five billion dollar investment in five factories in China.  This will give a much bigger foot print for the company.

Over the last decade China has seen amazing car growth with many families now earning enough to buy their first car.  The roads were built first when the country still chose to ride a bike to work but now cars clog up the new highways.

Back here in the UK Ford is a huge name and nothing seems likely to change that with everyone understanding the history behind the company.
