What are the Main Filters in a Car?

The four main filters that are fitted to every car are:

  • Air Filter
  • Cabin Filter (Or Car Pollen Filter)
  • Oil Filter
  • Fuel Filter

Each of these filters is designed to catch impurities and keep everything flowing. Whether it's pollution in the air, dirt in the oil, or contaminants in the fuel, vehicle filters are an essential part to keep everything moving without debris getting through. Not changing any of these filters on a regular basis can result in damage to your vehicle.

What does an Air Filter do on a Car?

A car air filter allows oxygen to flow through your vehicle without pollution, road debris, dust, or even insects reaching the engine.

Changing your filters ensures your car performs and drives at its best. And because we know that you love to keep costs down by doing the work yourself, we keep our prices competitive thanks to our fair price promise.

Changing your air filter regularly can save on fuel as well as support the performance of the car. We stock performance air filters at GSF Car Parts to give you that extra bit of power for your car’s engine.

What does Cabin Filter do?

Cabin filters for cars keep the air coming into the cabin clean and free from impurities. It filters out dust, pollen, and other airborne particles, keeping the car’s HVAC system clean. Perfect for those of you that suffer from allergies or respiratory issues. A carbon-activated cabin air filter will also capture exhaust pollution and other outside odours.

What's more, changing your vehicle cabin air filter can increase the life of the vehicle's AC unit and will make sure that your windows defog efficiently.

What does an Oil Filter do?

For keeping your engine clean and running smoothly we need an engine oil filter. It removes any oxidized oil, metallic particles, and other dirt from your oil. Purifying the oil so that it can work your engine effectively. Changing your car oil filter reduces the amount of wear on your engine.

If your engine is running a bit rough, it might be time for an oil filter change.

How do I know if my Fuel Filter needs Changing?

If the performance in your car has dropped. It might be the fuel filter. Petrol and diesel fuel filters eliminate impurities like dust and rust from your car's fuel. Protecting the vehicle's injectors and maintaining the life of your car's engine.

You can learn how to change your fuel filter in our knowledge hub.

What is the Sump Plug?

The sump plug is located on the underside of the sump pan, which sits directly below the engine of your car. The sump pan collects excess oil once it has been pumped through the engine. When the oil has been moved through the engine, it gets redistributed back into the system.

For maintenance on your engine, the sump plug allows you to drain the oil out. And the sump plug seal keeps a strong and tight seal between the two. Keeping the oil from leaking out.

When Should Car Filters be Changed?

Each car will require you to change your filters at different mileage points so check with your manual or your local garage if you're unsure.

As a guide, the filters should be changed:

  • Cabin Filter - 12,000 to 15,000 miles
  • Air Filter - 15,000 to 30,000 miles
  • Oil Filter  - 5,000 to 8,000 miles
  • Fuel Filter - around 30,000 miles
