What does a Secondary Water Pump do?
A secondary water pump (or auxiliary water pump) is not connected to the cooling system and is primarily used to circulate warm coolant to the heater exchanger. It's for driver and passenger comfort, allowing sufficient heating at low RPM and speeds. It can also keep the cabin warm for a short amount of time, even after you've turned off the ignition.
A failed secondary water pump isn't a critical component and won't damage your engine if faulty. You'll notice the heating level drop, and it won't keep heating the cabin if the engine is turned off.
