Yep, they look like mk2/mk3 calipers.
The only difference in the cables is the length as far as i'm aware

J215,
Strange one this, never seen a caliper with a bolted on backing for the handbrake mech.
All the mk2 golf units now have a complete cast casing, the difference beteen the early & late ones (>mid 87 / mid 87>)  was the position of the handbrake mech lever (early = top of caliper / late = lower part)
What size is the piston on this btw.

Hi,
Thank you very much for the reply's gents, John the piston diameter is approx 30mm, the handbrake lever is on top of the caliper. The two calipers have different methods of winding back the pistons, one has a screw driver slot the other a allen key. Other than being different sides they are identical.
Do you know what is the longer cable? As length may be a problem (is'nt it always    !!! )
The pads look like MK2 to me  :?:  but been a while since i changed a set.

Once again thanks for the reply, any further thoughts would be great.
Cheers John

J215,
After a bit of searching, i reckon these calipers are off a Pre 85 model
Audi Quattro/coupe quattro.
The pad you have isn't like a an early golf (has a different centre tower & spring), seemed mor like an Audi unit (80/100/A4 etc) so then i searched the calipers and the only ones i could find with a bolted on rear section were off the Quattro models.. :P
Well thats what i reckon anyway  8) .

Hi John,
You are a star mate  :D  A bit of a supprise that for sure!! Will check the avalabity of cables on the main site, i worked as a tech at a VW main dealer approx 5 years ago and didnt reconise them as something familar, i started after VW had split there sites from Audi. i brought them at an auto jumble and looked ideal for what i wanted but the gent selling was'nt sure what they fitted
A quick picture of the set up if you are intrested-

Cheers again mate, John
