Ignition Leads Question
« on: August 13, 2008, 08:52:35 AM »
About 20k miles ago (& 3yrs) I fitted a set of Beru (Silicone-Blue) ignition leads to my 91' Volvo 480 Turbo Auto. These were purchased here in France (before I discovered that GSF are cheaper inc delivery :D )
These leads were supposedly good for 50,000Kms.

Anyway at about 18k miles the king lead had corroded through & snapped leaving SWMBO stranded about 4 miles from home. Luckily I had kept the old king lead as that looked worth keeping when it was replaced. A good choice!

Another 2k miles on & the Beru jobs are arcing slightly - time to replace! The old king lead still looks worth keeping as a spare! So Beru silicone leads, would appear not to be up to the job methinks.

I contacted GSF, expecting a set of 'Mann' leads & after a slight glitch by another staff member, Julie McColin at Heathrow dispatched my order.
 :D

I have received a set of BERU leads, but these are shown as OEM & are black, so not too worried -  they should be good.

One question - there are 6 leads in the set. With a 4-pot engine & king lead  that makes 5 required. Before I fit them, is there a reason for having 6? Also which one should be 'dis-regarded'? The GSF part number is V92614, which shows as for my car.

Mmm, tis a possibility, but the box clearly states:

ZEF 732
0300.890.732
Renault,Volvo
6x Leads
Made in France.

Mine is a Volvo with a Renault block.

Suppose it could be the right box with the wrong contents

I guess one of the GSF chappies will pick this up soonest..........

Maybe the coil is further away on one of the models so they put 2 different lengths in to cover both cars?

I THINK only one lead is a 'king' lead as it has the 'straight' connector as opposed to the right angled ones on all the others?

Not getting far with this :(

No replies to e-mails yet,  so I phoned GSF at Heathrow. My usual 'points of contact' are away.

Spoke to a lady who confirmed that the leads are correct for my car, but could'nt explain the reason for there being 6 leads.

So I'm going to fit them & see how they last.

No doubt, given time an answer will be given :)

Haha, spoke too soon as have just had a reply by e-mail from GSF.

Mr Clark,

Having checked out the part number you have been supplied. It appears that the HT Leads are correct for your vehicle.
It seems that both suppliers include an extra lead?  You should be able to fit the rest to your vehicle and keep one as spare.

Many Thanks

Me worryin' bout nowt

back off my jollies now,but not at work yet :P
You will probably find that one of the leads is actually for the 340 1.7 which has the same basic engine, but as the engine in the 340 is the "correct way" (north/south) the dizzy cap on these had the lead contacts at 90' to clear the bulkhead.hence the different angle for the leads
Normally you would get the correct (main) leads x4 + a choice of coil leads for the 400's: push on for the turbo models, clip on for the rest (renix type coil).
IIRC "Bougicord" were the O.E suppliers for the Volvo leads before they started using "Pencil coils", beru leads tended to be oem for the German vehicles, but shouldn't be a problem on the Swedish side.

Thanks John, guessed you were off on a jolly or something!

Have fitted them and AOK so far :D

PS Bougicord leads are still supplied from 'Mainstealers', for the older models at least.

A set of leads for a 6 cylinder engine would have 7 leads altogether.
