Gear selection on my 1998 1.4CL polo is very difficult particularly first gear. Very notchy and sometimes takes a few hard pushes to get it into gear. Any idea gratefully received.

I have been told that this can be a common problem with these cars and it shouldnt get any worse.

You can get a linkage repair kit for under a tenner, that would be the place to start. Also check the gearbox oil level.
If neither of these sort it, you can get a gearbox oil called Redline which seems to bring life back to an old knackered gearbox

Thanks neo I will try this for starters. I have the plug remover for the gearbox filler now so I will try the oil level and then the gearbox repair kit.
Nice mk2 btw. Dad had a 1600 a few years ago. Great car.
Thanks again
