Volvo 850 Glove box

I have had my much adored 850 Estate for many years with very few problems.
I have just tried to open the glove box and it won't open. It is un-locked, yet will not open.
Is this a common problem? And what can I do to fix it?

Does the lid move at all?
Either something has detached from lock/latch mechanism and is jamming it or some object such as a pen has moved and is wedged along hinge line. Try to poke an old bit of wire coat hanger along edges to see if anything has wedged itself. Or use a thin metal palette knife to try and unjam it.
