My guess is that fuel is returning back to the tank...pressurise the system before you try to start by squeezing the priming bulb or plunger on the filter and see what happens.  I think you may also need to look for air getting into the fuel lines, rather than fuel getting out.

Might be worth checking valve clearances. I've had XUD's with poor cold starting due to tight clearances. However, it does sound like there's a fuel problem

have you changed the fuel filter recently? If so, check the rubber sealing ring in the cap.Have come across a few XUD engines with this problem, as the only lift pump in the system is in the injection pump and therefore relies on suction back through the filter to bring the fuel up. Any air getting here really makes starting a pain in the harris

Hi Guy's, yes I have replaced the fuel filter with an original citroen one.
Someone suggested that it might be something to do with the primer pump, apparently they have a non return valve in them?

Any ideas?

Cheers

Dave

I had this problem with my 1993 1.9TD lx. It was leaking a small amount of diesel from the rubber return line so air was getting into the fuel system. The leak was only evident with the enging running. Pumping the plunger to a firm resistance helped to get it started. A new rubber return fuel line sorted it out.

Hi Guys,

Further to the fuel problem, and poor starting,
I have replaced the primer pump, (Thanks Ebay) but was still a problem to start, but I think I've found the problem.
On the cannister that holds the fuel filter, there is what looks like a non return valve? The Citroen drawings say its a drain point (Don't know if this is right)but with the filter out, and using the primer pump, I could see air bubbles in the fuel.
Anyway to cut a long story short, I put some Blue Tack over the hole, and it starts first time, every time now [:D]

Hi Guys
I've got real trouble starting my 1993 Xantia 1.9 TD SX
Takes almost a minute of turning over before it fires up.
No Black smoke, only a bit of whitish grey.
Once it;s running, its fine for about 3/4 of a mile, then conks out, Like it's out of fuel.
Its a bugger to restart, and then it's fine for the hour's journey to work.
I have the repeat on the way home.
Am I looking for a leak in a fuel line?
Haven't been able to find one yet!
I did change the fuel lines about 4 years ago, I had a puddle or diesel on the floor, and the pipe had cracked from the bulkhead to the engine.
No leaks seen yet.

Any ideas what to look for would be greatfully recieved.

Thanks

Dave
