940 Td cambelt change
(1/1)
swansea_jack:
Hello all. New to the world of Volvo [:I]. I have just bought a 940 TD Estate on a 'H' plate 1990. Its got the 2388cc engine in it and I want to give it a full service. I have changed the cambelt on a few PSA XUD's before so I know my way around things. But I would like home help with a few items from you guys and girls.
*Does the engine have a hole that you put a pin in to lock the crank solid so as not to put the timing out? And where about is it?
*The injection pump with another belt???? Any pointers on keeping the timing in place
*Should the water pump be changed or not (have done it on the XUD's)?
*Any other hints tips and pointers you think may benefit me.
Very pleased with the car and I have only had it a few days. I have been told that its a Audi engine fitted [?]
Many thanks in advance.

Hi,
you will need a camshaft setting bar, tension gauge and locking pins and crankshaft locking bar to safely change cambelt on this car.
Book time is 2.90 hours (just under 3 hours) which is quite quick compared to some cambelt swaps.
It would be prudent to change water pump at same time as an old pump with age and mileage can start leaking once disturbed and the extra belt tension from a new belt can cause bearing collapse, belt alignment issues and timing belt failure.
