Hi & 968 Brakes
(1/1)
Speedster:
Hi Guys, Just joined here, shame it's so quiet.
It's time to start thinking new brake discs and pads on my 968, there seem to be loads of Zimmermann Cross-drilled 299x24 & 299x28 discs on Ebay, don't seem to be able to locate them on GSF.
Are they fairly long-lived? I've heard that they suffer more from cracking because of the drillings. Anyone have any first-hand experience, do they actually make any difference in normal use?

Hi,
Be careful of buying brake discs or other brake components using online auction sites. There have been a few well documented cases of fake and counterfeit components and/or cheap pattern parts originating from China. Unless the online company offers 'cast iron' guarantee that they only sell European TUV marked and tested parts and lists an actual address then be cautious.
The benefits of cross-drilled brake discs seems to generate discussions and arguments all over the net.
The purpose of cross drilled discs is supposedly to help cooling, dissapate gases given off by hot pads, help deglaze the discs and help to dissapate rainwater. Yes, they can be prone to cracking if they're not well designed due to sharp edges around the holes which can become 'stress-risers' which concentrate stress which leads to cracking. Claims of rain water being shed is a bit of a misnomer as simple centrifugal force from a spinning disc will throw off water anyway.
Unless Porsche fitted cross-drilled discs straight from the factory then just fit good quality standard 968 discs and some decent pads.
Almost forgot to add. A colleague used cross-drilled discs on his tuned 3.9 Landrover Discovery but apart from making his wallet lighter, he reported they didn't make the already good brakes feel any different. They did look good through the alloys though... :?
