You could try replacing the good old coolant temperature sensor first?

It might also be the lambda sensor: it needs to hot to work correctly. Try a diagnostic test and see if any fault codes are stored. Do NOT be tempted to save money and buy an aftermarket sensor, they aren't that good unfortunately [:(]

Unfortunately I dont have access to a fault code reader.  Does the computer store any fault codes for the 1.4 model that has distributer and carb rather than fuel injection and electronic ignition?

Ah, it's a carb model.............then the picture changes significantly: what year is it and what type of carb?

First off check all the vacuum hoses and pipes around the carb. Also look at the spark plugs, leads, rotor arm and inside the distributor cap.

Check the air filter too!

its a 98 polo I have no idea wot the carb is.  2 be honest this is the first trouble iv had with it from new so I havnt really bothered takin all the covers and stuff off.  The spark plugs were done recently and I asked them 2 check the rotor arm, cap etc on the service.  Il whip all the covers off and have a look at some point when I hav a bit of time on my hands.  Its more of an annoyance than a problem so im happy just 2 leave it 4 the mo.

GL,
TBH I doubt very much its a carb you are looking at, it sounds like a single point injection unit, which to be fair looks very much like a carb if glanced at.
As said, it may be a faulty temp sensor,or even the idle control valve unit on the side of the S.P.I housing.
As the ignition side has been looked at,unless they've missed somthing major i doubt its any thing to do with that.

I have noticed this problem getting gradually worse over the past few months.  When cold I start the car pull away fine then as I approach the junction at the end of my road, clutch down, brake and the engine stalls out. Restart the car and it doesnt happen again till the car is cold.

any help geatly appreciated.
