Polo mk4: Lots of noise from the back

Probably got a knackered tyre. Do a diagonal swap with them (front left to back right, front right to back left etc) and try it again.

I have just changed the wheels around as suggested but the noise hasnt changed.  Any more suggestions greatly appreciated as this noise is really annoying me now.

Did you use decent bearings or the cheapo ones?
Back brakes ok? Not binding?

Everything else has been checked including all the brakes and all the wheel bearings.  The wheel bearings I used were from GSF so they should be ok

Hate to jump in on this one but I've come across this before and you're not going to like the cause one little bit.........
I'm hearing and seeing more and more VW rear bearing failures and the cause appears to be the stub axle wearing. Now whether that is due to people driving on with a noisy bearing or whether there is a metallurgy issue with these stub axles I'm not quite sure. The ones that I have seen personally have had significant and visible wear although one was only diagnosed after substitution (noise disappeared).

It's just a thought.........

Hmm sounds expensive.  I hope its not that, the stub axles looked ok when I did the bearings but I didnt really take a good look at them so maybe ur right.  Thanks 4 that I will take it under consideration.

Yeah I see what you mean: the price ranges from 18.50 +the dreaded to 42.50 + the dreaded dependant on model. I'd be tempted to strip the bearing back down and have another look.
Now I'm sticking my neck out so please be gentle but you did change the inner bearing shell when you did the job? I only ask because I've known people just change the races and leave the shell in the hub because it's so difficult to remove.

Yep, the weather is pretty grim up in the North too at the moment [:(] I'm waiting for a window in the weather to refit two doors to the project golf.......at this rate I'll still be waiting in a weeks time [}:)]

I blame the government [:D]

Hey guys im at a bit of a loose end with this one.  Ive had this noise for a bit and its gradually getting louder, I thought it was the wheels bearings so I changed the(turns out they needed changing anyway). However this did not cure the problem so I have no idea where the noise is coming from.
