did the old tyres show any sign of wear,if so then its probably the inner track rod joint,which is a ball and socket type joint,its not complicated to replace just hard to get onto it with any tools,they sudgest you replace the sping steel locking tab washer between it and the rack shaft

yes! noticeable wear on the inside edge particularly on the nearside tyre. Ok so I don't need to get a replacement rack? Dont fancy scrubbing my new tyres so i'll get it done ASAP. Thanks for the advice guys.

Yep! I would go with citronut's diagnosis a few checks have comeback with the same reply. Tie rod N43519 @ £12.50+vat
