SMOKEY 480 TURBO

CX,
What colour is the smoke[?].
I had a similar prob once with a 440 turbo,It was in my opinion ethier a bloked breather ("can" shaped canister at the front of the engine),or a gunked upped oil pipe.
My money was on the breather system part, as when i dropped off the intercooler pipe (1x jubilee clip [:D]),the smoke pretty much stopped.
down side was seeing that the interrcooler had oil in it,and lack of full boost.
You can clean the intercooler if it has got oil in it with "intercooler cleaner",and replace the breather box (which is a tight interference fit IIRC).This could well sort the problem.
I never did fix mine, instead i just sold it on with the pipe disconnected [}:)].
J.

Hi There...I have a "J" reg 480 turbo, which occasionally emits a HUGE cloud of smoke from the exhaust, but ONLY when the car is "ticking over" at traffic lights or junctions etc, or when I'm doing a lot of "stop and go" town driving, now I'm talking A LOT of smoke here, it actually turns heads there's that much of it!!![:(].Motorway driving is fine, with no smoke apparent and there is no lack of performance, the engine seems healthy with no smell of burning oil and no sign of oil and water mixing (no "mayonnaise-like" deposits in the oil-filler cap), oil pressure reading seem fine too...does anyone have any idea as to what my problem could be, and how much my bank account will suffer to fix it...I'm new to Volvo's so I'm a little "in the dark" here...PLEASE HELP....

Last post is GOOD advice!

Check all of your Turbo pipes are correctly sited. Air-leaks can course this. Air intake sensor (MAF) also. Plugs? fit NGKs. Good luck!

Another recent find - On the throttle body, or the rear of it to be exact is a braided hose of about 2" (This is on Turbo's only mind). It fits onto a brass nipple on the throttle body & attaches to a very thin plastic pipe woth two small clamps.

When I checked mine it had a large split in it causing a major air-leak. Plugs sooted up, lack of power etc etc.

Give it a check, even if it looks okay, give it a wiggle - it may well fall apart as the rubber perishes & braid only holds it together............ :D

There is another such braided hose on the off-side of the engine right at the top on the pipe-work.
