VW Water Cooled / Re: Polo classic electric windows defect

Hi neo

Thanks for your response, I'll try a battery disconnect - I'm assuming this is like re-booting a computer? Not sure if its relevent but the car only has a simple key, no blipper locking? Does that effect the likelihood there is a seperate control unit? Many thanks again Bill

VW Water Cooled / Polo classic electric windows defect

Evening All

I wonder if anyone can help me with the mother-in -law's car! It's a Polo Classic estate one of the very last registered in 2001. Both electric windows stopped working. By loosening the motor bodies they would start working again, usually just long enough for me to give it back before they packed in again! So I took the plunge and bought a new motor from VW (about £150) Perfect. Gave it back and its stopped working again! AGGGHHHH

A few poniters: as soon as they are made to work they seem perfect, fast and smooth etc. The electric sunroof has stopped working too. The fuses are all OK. There is no apparent damage to wiring and manipulating the trunckingcarrying wiring between a post and door has no effect. Is there an ECU just for the windows/roof? Or any other common electric component?

Please help I need to maintain good relations with the M-I-L and this is not helping!!

Thanks Bill

Hi there, I'm new here but I'm a VW fan of old and I've got a big problem to sort out. My mother in law was driving along in said Polo when she hit a big puddle and the engine stopped suddenly. Water was ingested and VW say it needs a new engine - gulp! It's a 51 reg car and its worth repairing. Any ideas where I can buy a recon or used engine. The engine number starts ASV. Any ideas, suggestions, or experiences of this type of failure most welcome.

Thanks

Bill

I'm giving it back tomorrow - but on the way to the MOT test today I noticed that the water temp guage had dropped back to the end stop. It's done it twice now and then without warning resumes working normally. What do you reckon? Any offers of advice welcome as usual! Good news is it passed the MOT, the smoke test bit with flying colours.

Cheers

Hi guys

I've now done 130 miles and it's spot on. A couple of things you might be able to advise on: When it starts first thing there are a couple of tiny hick-ups in the first few seconds, probably wouldn't even notice them unless I was paying attention - any ideas on this? Second, the idle speed is about 950rpm - a shade high I think, how can I alter this? and what should it be? Finally, before I give it back is there anything I should do, check or replace?

Many thanks

Bill

It's a runner!

2.6 miles completed and it sounds dead right, doesn't smoke at all, holds the right water temperature. I'm delighted, although I'm going to do a hundred or so miles before I give it back to the mother in law!

Many thanks to Stan[8D] and Neo[8D] for your excellent considered advice which has proven spot on at every step.

Cheers

Thanks again for the advice. The followers had actually 'settled' considerably overnight and once I'd turned the cam over a few times it all looked OK to me. So, the head is back on, new cam belt done, there's a chance I might get somewhere near finished tomorrow!

Cheers

Hi there Stan and Neo plus anyone else with any advice!

Here's an update, followed by the next bit I don't understand!

Bores honed out beautifully. New rings on the pistons, new big end bearings, and the bottom end all back together - feels right, pistons all at the right height and turning over nicely. So I'm happy.

As far as the glow plug goes, great advice. I bought a tap as you suggested rather than go straight for the helicoil. Got the tap from Snap On, ordered it online £4.40+vat and p&p - stunning value! And this is the good bit it has reclaimed the thread and the new glow plug tightened up feeling dead right.

The head was completely stripped so I lapped all the valves in and fitted new stem seals. I don't know much about hydraulic tappets (is it common to call them buckets?) but I cleaned them up and refitted them. I put the cam in following the Haynes manual and tighted up 2 and 4 bearing caps. Here's the odd bit - all the valves are open to some extent! I can only suspect that the hydraulic tappets have grown somehow? What's that all about? What do I do to sort it?

My sincere thanks again guys

Bill

A further update: result on the rods, managed to get two used rods from 'The Engine Shop' in Erith. Jim Gray sorted me out there, top bloke and very helpful. So £75 for a pair of rods instead of 340+!

Had another thought on the glow plugs. If you look at the head the thread for the glow plug goes down much further than was utilised by the original plug. Can anyone tell me if there is an alternative plug manufacturer that threads the body further down? Do you get my drift? Failing that it has been suggested that I might get away with just re-tapping the head - anyone know where I could buy an M10x1.0 tap? If I have to buy a great big set it will obviously be dear and so I'll then probably buy the helicoil kit for £50.

Any advice welcome.

Cheers

Thanks again for the responses guys. I've been to the VW dealer - £340+vat for a set of rods, can't just have the two I need, even so I think that's the route I'm going to take. Rang a Skoda dealer to check their price and it was exactly the same - shame!

I hadn't tought of just re-tapping, it's got to be worth a try and then failing that it appears I can buy the helicoil kit for about £50.

Thanks again for your help,

Bill

Thanks Stan, I'm going for it and I'll keep you updated. I'm assuming the only place to really get the bits is a VW dealer? If I bought them from a Skoda/Seat dealer for the ASV engine would they be any cheaper? Sorry this sounds like 20 questions but also do I need to change the head bolts and would you be able to confirm the thread size for the glow plug (I'm guessing M10x1.0?)

Very many thanks again

Bill

First, yes the insurance company did accept a claim but they wrote the car off but it still meant a big loss for my in laws, hence me volunteeriny to repair the car. They have bought back the salvage and I've now got the car to decide which way to go.

I'm hoping Stan will offer some more advice! The VW dealer removed the head and sump, and various other bits, all of which I seem to have in various bags in the boot. There has been no valve/piston contact and the cam belt looks normal. The centre two rods are seriously bent (instead of the piston crown being 1mm above the block they are about 4mm down!) The big end bearings look fine - I expected them to be 'squished'. With all the rods and pistons out the crank turns over beautifully. The only other problem I could see was that the head had been stripped, and one glow plug had been snapped off! Great. I've managed to get it out and although it will need a helicoil, the bore and seat that the glow plug tightens up against are undamaged.

My plan is to hone the bores myself, fit new rings and two new rods, new big end bearings, helicoil the head and fit new glow plugs and new cam belt, then fire it up and see what happens. The thing is we know the car's history from day one, its only done 48,000 miles. I'm balancing this course of action over buying an engine which I wouldn't know much about.

Any comment on my plans as above most welcome. For the record, I'm not a mechanic (I'm a Fireman) but I have been building my own Minis for racing for 20 odd years and I'm enjoying this particular challenge.

Cheers

Thanks again for your input Stan. I'm going to start work on it next week. My basic plan is to get the engine out, and strip it down to assess the damage. If repairs are possible I'll consider this, if not it either a recon or a used motor I guess. If I got a 1.9 tdi from any of the other makes/models you suggested I'm presuming that I could use the block and head assembly and swap over all the ancilliaries? I'll keep you posted once I've got some hard facts. Cheers
