French Cars / Scenic timing belt change.
« on: May 03, 2006, 08:47:35 PM »
This is quite a simple job and nothing to be scared about.  The timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft are clearly visible, and to release the pulley bolt on the crankshaft get a helper to put the car in top gear, stand on the brake pedal whilst you undo the bolt from underneath.  The tensioner - which is rarely replaced - is turned by hand anticlockwise until the belt is tensioned correctly.  If you can just twist the belt through 90 degrees between the water pump and the camshaft it will be ok.  Here's what you do - raise the front of the car.  Remove the alternator belt and PAS belt.  Remove the RH wheel.  Remove the RH inner wing panel that exposes the crankshaft pulley.  Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and pull the pulley away.  Remove the timing belt cover.  Align the timing marks, undo the tensioner nut and swing it out of the way.  Remove the old belt, and replace with new.  Adjust the tensioner, ensuring that nothing moves. Rotate the engine by hand, and check all marks and the tension again.  Have fun!  Cheers John

VW Water Cooled / mk3 golf 1.8 chugs on tickover
« on: May 01, 2006, 03:32:13 PM »
Its better to renew the HT leads, distributor cap and rotor arm at the same time - just to rule these items out.  Also check for any arcing around the coil area (best to run the engine in the dark for this one) and finally, do a compression check.  All cylinders need to be about the same - look for 200 psi or thereabouts - coil disconnected and the throttle wide open as you crank it over.

VW Water Cooled / Which battery????
« on: April 30, 2006, 05:41:15 PM »
The bigger the battery A/H the better - so long as it physically fits in (watch the height!)  Your battery test theory is correct, and the only draw you should see is to the radio memory and the immobiliser if it has one - just a few milliamps.

The correct ignition timing is 6 degrees BTDC at 2250 rpm for the ABK engine, mate - according to Autodata.

VW Water Cooled / Brake Pads \ disc
« on: April 26, 2006, 07:46:57 PM »
When you get the old discs off, use some fine grade emery cloth to clean the hub face back to bright metal.  Get rid of all of the dust, apply some spray coppaslip, pop the new disc on, work it to and fro a couple of times, then pop the retaining screws back in - but don't over tighten them.  Remove any protective grease from the discs with brake cleaner.  Enjoy!

VW Water Cooled / Fuel Injection Coolant Tempurature Sensor
« on: April 15, 2006, 06:35:14 PM »
You may find that the tickover speed may rise slightly when you disconnect the sensor - and a fault code may be logged but don't worry about it....At the sensor itself look for around 200 ohms when hot and much higher - into the kilohms band - when cold.  Best thing to do is to replace it as they aren't the best quality.  Around £15 with a new O ring.

Hi Kristian - yes, you have to release the crimp that contains the inner joint - very careful prising with a screwdriver and pliers will eventually work fine, and the joint can be released reasonably easily.  It can be re peened over again when the work is done.  Regarding the wear lip on the driveshaft end, the oil seal can accommodate a slight wear lip but obviously if its too deep then an oil leak will result - however if it was dry before there is no reason why it shouldn't be ok afterwards - but its best to pop a new seal in anyway.  Hope this helps a bit! Cheers John

Yes it is possible but you need a long pinch bar to depress the wishbone far enough to allow the ball joint pin to come clear.  Once this is done the drive shaft can be levered clear from the gearbox for the repair to go ahead.  The inner driveshaft joint has to be removed first if I recall correctly and this involves releasing the crimped end of the aluminium can which takes a bit of care and patience.  The easiest way is to by an exchange driveshaft which does save loads of time and hassle.

French Cars / Saxo timing belt
« on: April 13, 2006, 08:49:14 PM »
Dead right mate, take it back and insist that they sort it.  The timing belts are dead easy on these and will only snap if the tension is not correct or if the belt they fitted had the wrong profile teeth - of course they will deny both.  Their work is sub standard and they should be made aware of this.  Good luck with it.

French Cars / Berlingo sticking clutch
« on: April 11, 2006, 08:07:29 PM »
The clutch cables on these often creak - however, check the clutch operating arm on the top of the gearbox.  They often sieze due to moisture ingress and its worth slipping the clutch cable off at this end and see if you can feel the free play by hand.  If its tight, run a bit of oil down the pivot and eventually it will free off.

Best to pop the nearside wheel off - with the car level, look at the gearbox end plate.  Its the biggest bolt of the lot.
