VW Water Cooled / Polo classic electric windows defect

Evening All

I wonder if anyone can help me with the mother-in -law's car! It's a Polo Classic estate one of the very last registered in 2001. Both electric windows stopped working. By loosening the motor bodies they would start working again, usually just long enough for me to give it back before they packed in again! So I took the plunge and bought a new motor from VW (about £150) Perfect. Gave it back and its stopped working again! AGGGHHHH

A few poniters: as soon as they are made to work they seem perfect, fast and smooth etc. The electric sunroof has stopped working too. The fuses are all OK. There is no apparent damage to wiring and manipulating the trunckingcarrying wiring between a post and door has no effect. Is there an ECU just for the windows/roof? Or any other common electric component?

Please help I need to maintain good relations with the M-I-L and this is not helping!!

VW Water Cooled / Polo 1.9 TDi 110 bhp with broken engine

Hi there, I'm new here but I'm a VW fan of old and I've got a big problem to sort out. My mother in law was driving along in said Polo when she hit a big puddle and the engine stopped suddenly. Water was ingested and VW say it needs a new engine - gulp! It's a 51 reg car and its worth repairing. Any ideas where I can buy a recon or used engine. The engine number starts ASV. Any ideas, suggestions, or experiences of this type of failure most welcome.
