VW Water Cooled / Bora problems continue. engine cuts out
« on: September 16, 2006, 10:41:13 PM »
Hi - me again.

Car: VW Bora 2.3 V5 on a 99 plate - 45000 miles

Well after getting my plugs and leads changed to cure a judering/misfire problem I now have another even worse problem which has happened only days from the other being fixed.

Car starts and runs fine, but after driving 10 minutes or so (I guess till it's warm) the engine just cuts out. Upon turning the ignition I can hear it turning over perfectly well but nothing fires up. Also the battery light is on the dashboard. All the lights come on on the dashboard fine. Leave the car 30 mins and it will fire first time and run for a little while and cut out.

RAC guy who has just got me home tested the leads and I cranked it, he said it wasn't spaking. Reckons it's a component problem somewhere. possibly Crank Case sensor or coil pack.

Seriously any help on this would be more than welcome.

VW Water Cooled / VW Bora - hesitation when moving up throguh gears
« on: August 30, 2006, 12:38:41 PM »
Hi there.

my bora V5 (99)has a problem when moving up through the gears, well more noticeably when changing to 2nd and 3rd. The gear change is fine and responds instantly but shortyly after (2000RPM 2500RPM) there is a couple of hesitations (very small, but still there) as it's moving up the rev range. Engine seems smooth and there's certainly no power depreciation (I think). This tends to happen when accelerating gently as if you do it a bit more swiftly it seems fine.

Any of you fine Chaps/Chapesses got any ideas what I could be looking for?

Many thanks,

Mark

Saab Car Parts Forum / low idling
« on: October 03, 2005, 05:33:25 PM »
Hi theres.

my Saab 1990 900i 16v non turbo is having problems with rough idling and stalling. This happens hot or cold but I think worse when cold. The check engine light comes on but as soon as you step on the accelerator it picks up and the light goes off. the car drives fine and smooth and doesn't drink too much.... I get on average 29MPG which aint too bad for these I think.

I've checked all the obvious vacuum hoses and replaced 2 as 1 was definately split for sure and the other just fell apart. I dont know if I've missed any but I think I've got them all.

It always idles low but not always enough for the check engine light to come on I reckon at best 500 RPM.

When it's really cold though it does tend to rev higher on first start but after a few mins goes bad....

Could it just need the idling control bit adjusting? if so how would I do this, there is a kind of screw type thing protruding on what I think is the throttle body...should I give this a twist?

VW Water Cooled / Fuel pump on way out? Scirocoo mk2
« on: September 13, 2004, 10:31:37 AM »
Hi there all.

my cars been jumping recently when driving....it's ok through the revs and smooth as anything but as soon as load is going on, i.e i set of, then starts the judders. At first I thought it electrical so I re replaced the plugs (as silly motosave gave me ones with wrong offset) and the car was certainly smoother but still juddering. The leads are new and very good ones too. I even replaced the ignition coil from a friends dead rocco... It all started happening about a week to 2 weeks after i did a service...plugs dis. cap etc... i changed the fuel filter too (could it be this?). When it started happening i put back on all the old parts to see if any of the new ones were faulty but it still did this... the only thing i didn't put back on was the old fuel filter? From what i've been told they're not that complicated and not much can be wrong with one of these??

my feeling is now it is fuel related rather than electricl and I;m thinking the fuel pump is struggling... I am a little naughty with running the old rocco a bit low on fuel and wondered if this has damaged it? the fuel pump is just over 2 years old as when I bought it it wsa faulty (hence why i got it pretty cheap).. I was lucky then and just guessed it was the fuel pump causing the problems but now it's doing a similar thing again... I just want to make sure before buying another and paying for fitting as they aint cheap.

any help much appreciated.

VW Water Cooled / Speedometer cable - Scirocco mk2
« on: September 09, 2004, 10:33:37 AM »
Hi there anybody who can help.

a local garage I visited (and never again) fixed a ripped bulk head problem where the clutch cable enters (common problem I think)and also a gearbox linkage.... this is where they damaged something either on the speedo cable or something else nearby... they attempted to fix it, it worked for about 30 mins (although it was all over the place) and then died and has never worked since...

My problem here is they won't take responsibility for it and I'm stuch without a speedo reading, which in a way is wuite good as my rocco is now not clocking any miles up.

How easy is it to replace the speedo cable (assuming that is whats damaged)? and what exactly do I need to do?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks for the help guys, no doubt I'll be posting yet another problem on here in the not so distant future

VW Water Cooled / hesitation on bora

sounds similar to what was going on with mine before the most recent problem....mine turned out to be old plugs and leads...

sounds like an ignition problem of sorts though

Righto....car is still in the Garage

They replaced the Camshaft sensor when they found out where it was....no joy.

so now the diagnostics tool is showing Crankshaft sensor or crankcase sensor - not sure if they are one in the same? it's definatley one of the two but I misheard him.

So, could this cause the car to cut out after a short while and refuse it to start until it's cooled a little?

OK it's at the garage...they replaced the coil pack with one off another bora v5 and the problem still persists.

they than ran a diagnostics test on it and came back with the camshaft sensor fault....

would this cause the engine to cut out and not restart until it or the component in question had cooled down?

ooohhh that's nice...very nice.

I would've been in the market too, but I've been forced to buy a modern car *whinces* for work. I had an old saab 900 just before this with 190k on the clock....never a problem, but need something modern if i'm going to be travelling.

Nearly bought a fiat coupe too before the bora but decided against it for reliability issues....look where that got me

oh no....bet you were sad to see her go....I lknow I was with the scirocco, could've cried. Never have I driven a car as fun as that....again it just had to be scrapped MOt was going to cost 1200 and I only bought it 3 years previous for 400.

loved every minute of it though

well thanks for the pointers.

no fault codes unfortunately.

At fist I thought it was the stupid clifford alarm that was fitted before I bought it, thought it might be immobilising, but it's not that I don't think

I'll let you know what it turns out to be...

read a nice document on the net about coil packs that talks about resistance of HT leads and plugs damaging the coils etc. etc.

still got 3 months warrenty on this and i've got the garage to come out and pick it up for them to have a look. Wasn't sure the warrenty would cover this, but they seem accomadating enough.

Love the golf Neo, looks in pucker condition. wish I had my old Scirocco, 3 years of nearly trouble free motoring and when it did go wrong you could hazzard a guess to what it was. With this I daredn't even lift the bonnet up
cheers again
